Thai Boxing or Muay Thai is Thailand's national sport. In Muay Thai, the entire body becomes a weapon. Here, eight contact points on the body mimic weapons of war. The hands mimic the dagger and the sword, the forearms and shins become armor, the elbow becomes a hammer or heavy mace, the knees and the legs become a staff or axe.
Initially, Muay Thai bouts were fought in open courtyards. But now, they are fought in rings. Muay Thai is called the 'Sport of Kings', because even kings were proficient in it. King Prauchao Sua used to dress up like a commoner and take part in Muay Thai tournaments in small villages and cities. People of all ages can learn Muay Thai for recreation, for sport or even to take part in tournaments. Many of the best Muay Thai schools are located in Thailand, though the martial art is becoming popular in Western countries also.
